Maharashtra Launches Urban Rooftop Garden Program

To combat heat islands and improve urban biodiversity, Maharashtra has launched a city-wide rooftop garden initiative called Hari Chhat (Green Roof). Residents of Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur are being encouraged to convert rooftops into vegetable gardens, with 50% subsidies on soil, planters, and compost kits. The municipal corporations will offer online training and community gardening advisors. Over 10,000 households have already registered, and many schools are also converting terraces into gardens. The government aims to develop over 1 lakh square meters of green roofs in the first year.
